Instrument Rating
How to become an Instrument-Rated Pilot?
An Instrument Rating is probably the most complex of all pilot training but also the most rewarding. Let Flyright Aviation teach you
the skills to fly safely solely by reference to instruments. Let us expand your aviation experience and broaden your aviation knowledge in the exciting field of instrument flight.
Minimum Requirements
To be eligible for an Instrument Rating, you must hold at least a U.S or foreign ICAO Private Pilot certificate and a valid third (3rd) class medical. In addition, students will be required to pass an aeronautical knowledge
test; and meet the flight proficiency and aeronautical experience in accordance with the
instrument rating requirements.
Prerequisites
40 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot in command (PIC).

Frequently Asked Questions?
I just completed my Private Pilot certificate, can I start an instrument rating course?
Yes. The aeronautical experience for the instrument-airplane rating, part 61.65(d), requires the pilot to have 50 hours
of cross-country flight time as pilot in command at the pre-test completion of the course. If you have none or some of this requirement we can design a course outline
to incorporate training and time build; however, some time building will be required resulting in additional costs if you have less
40 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot in command.
What if I don't have the 40 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot in command time?
The aeronautical experience for an instrument rating,
part 61.65(d), requires the pilot to have 50 hours of cross-country
flight time as pilot in command. We only suggest having 40 hours of previous cross-country as pilot in command flight experience
to help accelerate your flight training as you will obtain the last 10 hours during flight training and would not require any additional costs for time building.
Can I start a home training course for the instrument rating?
Yes. It is actually recommended that you start a home study course to familiarize yourself with the knowledge areas required for
an instrument rating. Some excellent books and videos are available online. Once your course has begun, we will re-enforce what you have learned in our ground school sessions and during the pre/post flight discussions.
I have previous instrument training with another flight instructor, can I use some of the time?
Yes. All flight experience from an authorized FAA or military instructor is valid toward your flight experience requirement. However it is required per
part 61.65(d)(2) for an instrument rating that a minimum of 15 hours of the total minimum 40 hours of flight training be from an authorized flight instructor
who holds an instrument-airplane rating (CFII).
