Additional Aircraft Class Ratings

Adding an engine class add-on to your pilot certificate is a great way to challenge and enhance your pilot skills allowing you to fly a vast number of different aircraft. And for single-engine pilots, just think about the added safety of another engine on those cross-country flights.

Minimum Requirements

There are no minimum requirements for an additional aircraft class rating. A person who wishes for an additional class rating on their pilot certificate must get an endorsement or training record from an authorized instructor attesting that the pilot is competent in the aeronautical knowledge areas and proficient in the areas of operation; and take a practical test (checkride). There is no specific training time and you need not take an additional knowledge test.

Frequently Asked Questions?

Single-Engine Class Add-on

What maneuvers are required for the addition of a single-engine class add-on?

Adding a commercial pilot single-engine class to an existing multi-engine class certificate is rather simple. There are assorted maneuvers such as lazy eights, eights on pylons and chandelles which cannot be safely conducted in multi-engine aircraft so they were not tested during the multi-engine flight test. Please consult the additional ratings task table in the PTS and the FAA-H-8083-3A "Flying Handbook" for more details.

I hold a commercial multi-engine, instrument rating certificate, will I be required to perform instrument maneuvers during the single-engine class add-on flight test.

No. The commercial pilot airplane single-engine class add-on rating is strictly a VFR maneuvers flight test.

Multi-Engine Class Add-on

If I decide to obtain a multi-engine rating at Flyright Aviation, will there be any restrictions on my certificate?

No. Flyright Aviation uses a conventional Cessna 310 Twin with no centerline thrust restriction.

If you are military jet centerline and already hold a multi-engine certificate with a "Centerline Thrust Restriction", completing our program will remove the restriction.

I hold an instrument rating on my single-engine airplane pilot certificate. Do I need to take an addition instrument checkride?

If you hold an instrument rating on your current pilot certificate, you will be required to perform instrument proficiency in selected task areas for a multi-engine class add-on. Please refer to the practical test standards (PTS) for which maneuvers will be required.

NOTE: This is not an instrument flight reexamination.
